Resources
The Southwest Harbor Public Library Digital Archive contains historic photographs, documents, maps, and research material given to and shared with the library since about 1900. The Archive illustrates the way people, places, businesses, vessels, structures, organizations, and events relate to one another and tells the story of how islanders and “people from away” lived on and visited Mount Desert Island, Maine, in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries.
The Tremont Historical Society provides the facility and the tools for researching the history of the town of Tremont by archiving, preserving and exhibiting the artifacts, photographs and documents that have been entrusted to us. As part of this mission, we make these collections accessible, both physically and digitally, to the public.
Mount Desert Island Historical Society envisions an island-wide community working
together to promote appreciation of the histories of Mount Desert Island. Their mission is to foster meaningful engagement with the histories of Mount Desert Island.
The Bar Harbor Historical Society is a non-profit organization that strives to collect, preserve, promote and celebrate the history of our community. Experience "lost" Bar Harbor and its famous summer colony through our fine collection of early drawings, hotel memorabilia, photographs, sketches, and pictures of the devastating fire of 1947. The Society is housed in La Rochelle, a Georgian Revival mansion built in 1902-1903. In 2019 the Bar Harbor Historical Society purchased the estate with a desire to preserve the building and grounds for future generations and to display their wonderful collection of local artifacts for public viewing.
The Petite Plaisance Conservation Fund is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Marguerite Yourcenar house museum and to its continuation as a literary and cultural landmark.
