Charlotte Sanford Baker was born in 1858 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, one of seven children of Henry Martyn Baker (1828–1882) and Susan Virginia Barnes (1832–1915). Her grandfather, Cornelius Baker (1792-1868) helped found New York University, and her uncle, John Stewart Kennedy (1830-1909) was a railroad magnate and philanthropist who encouraged his niece’s altruistic instincts and left her the considerable fortune of almost $2 million when he died.
