Louise Gilbert
Louise Gilbert (?-1994) Louise Gilbert attended the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, where she met LaRue Spiker. In 1950, when Louise was living in Louisville, Kentucky, LaRue moved into her home and they became partners. Louise worked for many years for the International League of Women for Peace and Freedom (ILWPF), founded by Jane Addams. This was considered a subversive organization during the McCarthy Era in the 1950's. Louise joined the Wade Defense Committee with LaRue (see LaRue Spiker's page) and was arrested for sedition. After their case was thrown out, Louise moved to Philadelphia, continuing to work with ILWPF. After retiring, she moved to Maine in a cabin next to LaRue's. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters on Mount Desert Island. She died a year before LaRue.
